Final Image

I extended the shooting session.

This time with only one speedlight. The tripod was extended to position the Vivitar 285 inches away from the underside of the floor. The head was then angled to bounce the light onto the student.

With the Vivitar between the floor joists, the effect was spectacular, similar to a strip light with barndoors. It created a very narrow yet soft beam that wrapped naturally around the student. Due to the barndoor effect, the highly distracting background now receded to darkness.

One speedlight and it saved the day. Compare this with the first attempt (second thumbnail) and you can see the difference in visual impact. Same location, same subject, different lighting.
